Dr. Susan Talmage was born and raised in San Francisco and spent much of her childhood roaming the redwood forest in the Santa Cruz Mountains. She earned her undergraduate degree at The University of California at Davis. Dr. Talmage moved to Texas in 1974. She considers herself an “Honorary Texan” having settled in the heart of Dallas where she raised her family and pursued her professional career. She obtained her doctoral training at Southern Methodist University, and she obtained licensure from The Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists in 1994. Dr. Talmage devoted many years of her career to assessing children and families, particularly disenfranchised children remanded to state custody due to neglect and abuse; she was often called upon to testify in court to advocate for the best interest and welfare of the children. In concert with her work with traumatized children, Dr. Talmage assisted families from all walks of life build healthier and stronger relationships.
As a teacher and mentor, Dr. Talmage has provided clinical training to doctoral level psychology interns seeking licensure in Texas. Dr. Talmage has trained student interns from all over the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Many of her former students are now independently licensed psychologists who are making important contributions to the profession.
In recent years, Dr. Talmage’s clinical interests have been twofold. First, she has developed a keen interest in chronic pain, and the impact bodily discomfort has on an individual’s overall wellbeing, resiliency, and capacity to enjoy life. This passion prompted an expansion of her practice to offer pre-surgical medical clearance evaluations for individuals seeking weight loss surgery or spinal cord stimulator implant surgery. Dr. Talmage enjoys meeting these courageous patients who are committed to a better and healthier future.
Dr. Talmage also focuses her clinical attention on performing child custody evaluations, where she is called upon by the courts to evaluate parental capacities, and identify protective factors and challenges of each parent. Although individuals are oftentimes in distress due to family disruptions, Dr. Talmage enjoys being part of the resolution process that can lead to a better and more harmonious future for each parent and child.
Dr. Talmage is also a certified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) who works with employers and employees that are regulated by The Department of Transportation. In many cases, she is called upon to meet with an employee who has failed a random drug or alcohol test. Dr. Talmage acts as a community liaison to locate rehabilitative services, thus facilitating the employee’s return to work.
Like most of us, Dr. Talmage has many roles outside of her profession. She is a wife, mother, and grandmother. She and her husband love animals, and they recently acquired a new puppy, Ruby. As well as attending puppy training classes on the weekends, Dr. Talmage enjoys friends, her yoga practice, reading, travel, and nature. After a long day at the office, she also enjoys flopping on the sofa and “binge watching” NCIS with her husband, Bill.
